What is Tarot?

Having origins from the mid 1400's Tarot has been used by mystics, psychics and fortune-tellers as a map of mental and spiritual pathways.

Tarot can be used in several ways; as a means of divination, as a tool for self discovery, as an aid to spiritual or esoteric study or even as a game. Tarot is such a diverse medium that an entire lifetime can be devoted to it's study.

Each card possesses a pictogram and title that represents a specific concept. The belief in divination associated with Tarot focuses on the prospect that whatever cards are dealt to the participant will be revelatory.

The Major and Minor Arcana

Mystics and Psychics use a 78 card tarot deck with two identifiable parts:

  • The Major Arcana, representing more significant secrets or forutnes, otherwise known as trump cards is made up of 22 cards without suits.  These are The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World and The Fool.  These cards are examined in more detail in the section below.

  • The Minor Arcana representing less significant secrets or fortunes, consisting of 56 cards, made up of four suits of 14 cards each; ten numbered cards and four court cards. The court cards are the King, Queen, Knight and Page/Jack, in each of the four tarot suits. The traditional Italian tarot suits are swords, batons/wands, coins and cups; in modern tarot decks, however, the batons suit is often called wands, rods or staves, while the coins suit is often called pentacles or disks.  More detail of how to interpret the Tarot Cards is provided in the section below.
